The Space Between

The Space Between is a new immersive show about what happens when your brain tries to kill you.

When your mind conjures up a rose-colored door to nowhere, and you don't care that when you open it, there's no floor. You're just thinking, "Oh, I get to stop the pain for a second? Sick."

But what if you could remember happiness, agency, laughter? What it's like to feel joy in a room with other people? What's it like to win?

Weaving together the stories of four Chicagoans as they navigate the twisting paths of memory and dreams, The Space Between utilizes elements of escape rooms, surrealist performance art, and kitchen-sink realism to create an compelling immersive experience.

Written by Jess Wright Buha, Bradley Halverson, Amanda de la Guardia, Shea Lee, Calvin Adams, and Yongwoo Park.

APOTHECARY: Healing is an art, isn’t it? Here we have a salve for someone with a pox. The healing properties are already visible to us as the vibrant greens swirl with the shimmering golds. And now we imbue it with life–

(The Apothecary breathes on the vial.)

APOTHECARY: Stop it up,

(The Apothecary puts a cork in the bottle.)

APOTHECARY: And then, we agitate.

(The Apothecary shakes the bottle.)

APOTHECARY: What duration? That changes by the day, the hour, the pressure of the air. The things we can’t see. But we can feel them, can’t we?
